The federal trial over the redraw of South Carolina's congressional lines began Oct. 3 inside a downtown Charleston courtroom, where three judges heard from a neighborhood association president, a state lawmaker and a mathematician. The first witness, Anjene Davis, a Black man who lives in North Charleston, claimed South Carolina's election maps were "drawn to put us at a distinct disadvantage." But the president of the Chicora-Cherokee Neighborhood Association also reiterated "I'm not a mapmaker" when questioned about specifics.
